Vice Director’s Letter

Before I came into college, I thought I was going into research. I had worked in a few labs, done a few coding projects, and totally saw myself as a computer scientist. It was only by chance that I became interested in HCCG — I wanted to meet talented and driven people, to get hands-on experience working with real companies, and to try my hand at a different industry. I had no real consulting or business experience — all I knew was that I enjoyed solving puzzles and thinking through problems critically and creatively. And that’s all HCCG is looking for, regardless of your background!

I am so lucky to have joined this group. HCCG has a sense of camaraderie that is very rare elsewhere. I’ve loved the friendships I’ve made at joint work sessions, themed study breaks, Takes Bostons, midpoint and final parties, poker-nights, and casual hangouts on Zoom. The people in HCCG are humble, kind, open, and thoughtful, and I've found so many mentors, role models, and best friends in the club.

HCCG has also been immensely helpful for my personal and professional development. HCCG has trained me to build and deliver effective presentations, to think through and structure my research, to give and receive constructive feedback, and to interact with executives at Fortune 500 companies, nonprofits, and start-ups. I’ve had so many valuable leadership opportunities that I might not be able to experience again until 10 years down the road!

In short, I highly encourage you to apply for HCCG. Please reach out to me at cli1@harvardconsulting.org, or the rest of the leadership team at info@harvardconsulting.org if you have any questions. Best of luck and I look forward to meeting you soon!

My experience in HCCG has been incredible! Since my first day as a member, I have been welcomed into a close-knit community of highly driven and compassionate students who have greatly enriched my college experience. The engaging and high-impact casework has helped sharpen my problem solving, analytical, and leadership skills while fostering growth in new areas. From weekly client engagement with world-class industry leaders to sharing fun new experiences (including a virtual escape room!) with my case team, HCCG has been central to my professional and personal growth. HCCG is also committed to giving back, and I have been deeply inspired by the opportunities it provides to support the causes members care about. Overall, I couldn’t be happier with my decision to join HCCG and I highly encourage others to apply; it is truly a uniquely fulfilling experience.

I’m originally from Bowling Green, Kentucky, and before coming to Harvard, I had very little business experience or consulting knowledge. I had heard about HCCG and knew that it would be a great opportunity to receive real-world experience and prepare me for the future, so I decided to join. Although this semester was different than usual, I’m happy to say it was still 100% the right decision. I’ve always had a passion for problem-solving and working with other intellectually curious individuals, and HCCG has given me the opportunity to do just that. Even in a virtual semester, I’ve researched complex challenges, communicated with real leaders of real businesses, and joined a supportive community that is as driven and forward-thinking as I am. Together, all of us in HCCG work to develop solutions that make a real impact in the lives of others, and it is that impact I cherish most.

HCCG has forever changed my life. Growing up in Hawaii with a background full of water sports and no work experiences, I had never given much thought to what I wanted my future to look like, so when I joined HCCG, I was amazed by how much more there was to the world. Working with such talented and diverse peers while developing recommendations for clients taught me about how I work with others, what industries interest me, and what it’s like to drive impact in a company. Through each new case and the guidance of those around me, HCCG helped me focus on what I value and what I want to pursue, as well as helped me develop skills that I have been able to apply in everything from internships to “consulting” for people back home. Everyone at HCCG is passionate about the work they do and are constantly striving to achieve greater things. They look out for each other, are thoughtful in how they approach change, are willing to get gains and eat weird food, and are always finding ways to make me smile. I am grateful to have found such an incredible community at HCCG and am looking forward to the semesters to come.

HCCG has been one of my favorite parts of college. It’s been incredible engaging with leading industry clients while also finding a welcoming and fun community within the group. Even after going remote, HCCG has continued to be a big part of my college experience. From rewarding case work to creative virtual bonding events (like coffee buddies!), I found myself looking forward to each Zoom call with my team and our clients. I’ve learned so much and made so many friends (both while in-person and while remote!) and can’t wait to welcome new analysts to join such a wonderful community.

HCCG handled the new virtual environment with unmatched grace, blurring the line between digital and in-person interaction. As a new analyst last semester, casework was lively and fascinating, giving me the opportunity to engage closely with industry executives and build a set of invaluable skills ranging from presentation and structuring to data analysis and some coding (despite having no technical background!). HCCG’s frequent social events (and corresponding free food!) made it easy to meet and connect with new people even virtually, defying the distance created by online learning. Along the way, I met mentors and role models who were always ready to share their insights over a call; built friendships with my case team and beyond; and became part of an exceptionally genuine and compassionate community.

I joined HCCG in Fall 2020, the first entirely-virtual semester, and looking back I think it was one of the best things to come out of that semester. I was expecting there to be a lot of work and for people to be very busy, which to be perfectly honest was true, but what I was not expecting was for everyone to be incredibly supportive and connected throughout the semester. While I hardly met any new people through classes due to large virtual lectures, HCCG offered a tangible community where I was able to build meaningful connections while tackling interesting problems in a dynamic team setting. The opportunities for small social gatherings were definitely a highlight, as they made me feel like I was still connected to the Harvard community and lessened the sting of not being on campus.

HCCG was a highlight of my first semester. I was able to meet amazing friends and role models, learn invaluable skills, and work on real business problems. The more that I learn about the organization, the more impressed I become. Everyone is dedicated, open-minded, and willing to support one another. I would highly recommend comping the organization and would be more than happy to chat with anyone who is interested!
